The Canadian Loon Watch
La Montre Du Huart Canadien
By Authority of The Royal Canadian Mint
Avec l’autorisation de la Monnaie royale canadienne
This fine timepiece will bring you years of enjoyment.
The watch face is an exact foil of the reverse of Canada’s circulation dollar. The loon design was created by Robert-Ralph Carmichael, one of Canada’s most well-known wildlife artists. The one-dollar coin was placed in circulation in 1987 as a cost-saving measure to replace the one-dollar bank note. Canadians immediately dubbed it the "loonie."
The distinctive material used imitates the coin’s special colour which comes from the aureate nickel coating made of 88% copper and 12% tin.
The Common Loon (Gavia immer) is a true and lasting symbol of the Canadian wilderness. Its haunting call is known and recognized by campers and vacationers. It is a water bird like ducks, gees and grebes. Loons migrate to warmer areas around the Gulf of Mexico and on the east and west coasts of North America to winter, and return to northern lakes to breed when the ice melts in spring. Their days are spent hunting, feeding, resting and caring for young. Fish, crayfish, frogs, snails, salamanders and leeches make up their summer diet. Their life expectancy may be 15 to 30 years. Loons are protected by Canadian federal law and may not be hunted.
